Programming a MINDSTORMS® NXT Robot

These tutorials introduce you to the LabVIEW for LEGO® MINDSTORMS® environment and show you how to program a robot with motors and an ultrasonic sensor.

An ultrasonic sensor sends out sound waves and uses the time it takes for the waves to bounce off the nearest object and come back to measure the distance to that object. Imagine ultrasonic sensors on cars... a world without car accidents! It might even be possible for people who are visually impaired to drive!

Complete the following tutorial to get started.

Creating a New Robot Project

Before you start to program in LabVIEW, you first need to create a robot project. With a robot project, you can keep all the files relevant to your robot together.

  1. Click Create Program from the Getting Started Window.
  1. In the Templates section of the New Program dialog box, select Robot Project (.lvrbt). Click Create.

  1. In the Specify Robot Project Path dialog box, enter Rob under Robot Project Name. Below that, you can see the path where your robot project will be saved. Click Create.
  1. This is the Robot Project Center. Here is where you can see all the basic information pertaining to your robot. The highlighted section allows you to see the name, description, and picture of your robot. Click Edit.
  1. Under Robot Name, delete Rob.lvrbt and enter Rob the Robot. Under Description, enter My name is Rob the Robot. You can use LabVIEW to program me to do cool things. Click Save.

  1. Click Save at the top of the Robot Project Center.

You have successfully created your first robot project! Continue on to the next tutorial to explore more of the Robot Project Center and your robot project.
